What is the Re-Cyclery Bike Shop?
The Re-Cyclery is much more than your average bike shop. It is a unique, community-based social enterprise that recycles, refurbishes, and resells donated bikes and bike parts. At the Re-Cyclery, we give back to the community by keeping bikes out of landfills and providing the Bay Area’s cycling community with the best bargains for environmentally friendly transportation and recreation. We’ve been serving the Bay Area community since 1994 at 610 Fourth Street in San Rafael. The Re-Cyclery is also a crucial part of the Trips for Kids Bay Area organization; sales from the shop provide 50% of TFKBA’s funding.
What is Trips for Kids Bay Area (TFKBA)?
Trips for Kids Bay Area is a nonprofit headquartered in San Rafel in Marin County, CA dedicated to providing transformative cycling experiences for underserved youth. Founded in 1988 and now operating in 75 locations throughout the United States and internationally, TFKBA has opened the world of cycling to over 200,000 children. Our programs aim to build self-esteem, inspire healthy lifestyles, and instill environmental values through mountain bike rides, mechanical skills training, and environmental education.
About the Role:
TFKBA bike mechanics play a very important role in the Re-Cyclery bike shop. We are seeking qualified candidates with exceptional mechanical skills to refurbish used bikes, support our sales, be a bike and parts resource to our varied customer base, and help maintain the order and selection of our merchandise.

This is a part-time position. Pay is $17 - $21 an hour based on experience.

Primary Responsibilities:
- Re-condition donated bikes and parts to safe, saleable condition
- Merchandise bikes, parts, and accessories to maximize presentation, accessibility, and sales
- Assist customers in finding appropriate bikes, parts, gear, and accessories
- Process donated items (sorting, pricing, tax deduction receipts)
- Identify and strip bikes to be junked or salvaged for parts (not an easy task)
- Maintain all work and display areas to be organized, clean and safe to access
- Must be friendly, approachable, and customer-oriented
- Possesses knowledge of bicycle components (know what is compatible & what is not, etc.)
- Able to multitask on multiple levels
- Any additional tasks that insure excellent customer service and outstanding value
