Earn-A-Bike Path to CyclingThe Earn-A-Bike program is an online 4 week course with space for 6 youth each month, that provides the opportunity for youth who have been on rides through our Trail Rides Program to learn bike mechanics, bike safety and earn their own bike.
Classes are grounded in STEM principles and help students gain an understanding rooted in science and engineering. Due to COVID-19, we moved this program to virtual back in 2020, which in the end has been a positive shift for the organization given that it has expanded our reach - which means more youth on bikes! Additionally, if a young person’s access to riding a bike was only on one of our Trips for Kids Bay Area loaner bikes in the past - now they can ride on a regular basis. This multi-week course, along with optional rides earns beginner students a bike, helmet, and lock. Participants are recruited through our other programs and word of mouth. In the past many of our students returned after completion to learn advanced mechanics. Over the years, several graduates were hired as Earn-A-Bike assistant instructors, and others have gone on to work at local bike shops including our own Re-Cyclery! Some day in the near future we hope to add back an in-person Earn-a Bike program (in addition to the virtual program) at the Re-Cyclery Bike Shop to expand our reach even more. For now we celebrate the fact that we are able to get 72 kids on their very own bike each year. Earn-A-Bike: at Home
Re-tooled and better-than-ever, our Earn-A-Bike program is back with a structure and curriculum built for the era of online classes! With class sizes limited to six students, each session of our Earn-A-Bike at Home program facilitates meaningful and engaged discussions. Likewise, every session is supported by interactive hands-on homework to bring the concepts to life. Most importantly, if the students are able to attend all lessons and complete all homework - they will still earn a bike! If you know any students in San Rafael's Canal Community that might be interested, please contact our Earn-A-Bike Program Manager.
Through Trips for Kids, I was able to earn my first few bikes and that helped me get around town. The Earn-a-Bike program helped prepare me for the working world without all the responsibility…I was able to expand my skill set to include a wider range of bikes and that helped me get my job as a bike mechanic.
