Earn-A-Bike Path to CyclingThe Earn-A-Bike Program is a 4-week online course with space for up to six youth each month. It offers participants—many of whom have already joined us on Trail Rides—the opportunity to learn bike mechanics and safety while ultimately earning their very own bike.
Grounded in STEM principles, the classes help students build knowledge through science and engineering concepts. Since moving online in 2020 due to COVID-19, the program has expanded our reach, allowing even more youth to experience the freedom of riding. For those who previously had only access to cycling through our Trips for Kids Bay Area loaner bikes, this program now makes regular riding possible. Upon completing the multi-week course, along with optional rides, beginner students receive a bike, helmet, and lock. Many participants continue to advance mechanics, and some graduates have even been hired as Earn-A-Bike assistant instructors or gone on to work in local bike shops—including our own Re-Cyclery. Thanks to this program, we’re proud to help 72 young people earn their very own bikes each year. Earn-A-Bike: in Person
Re-tooled and better-than-ever, our Earn-A-Bike program is back with a structure and curriculum built for the era of online classes! With class sizes limited to six students, each session of our Earn-A-Bike in Person program facilitates meaningful and engaged discussions. Likewise, every session is supported by interactive hands-on homework to bring the concepts to life. Most importantly, if the students are able to attend all lessons and complete all homework - they will still earn a bike! Through Trips for Kids, I was able to earn my first few bikes and that helped me get around town. The Earn-a-Bike program helped prepare me for the working world without all the responsibility…I was able to expand my skill set to include a wider range of bikes and that helped me get my job as a bike mechanic.
